Jess Shelgren - Secretary

Another DCV member with a funny accent, Jess came from New York State in October of 2004 to live in New Zealand permanently. After 16 years in the dairy industry in Northeastern America, Jess was looking to work and live where the climate was better (northeast winters are ghastly), there are more cows than people, outdoor activities abound year round, the dairy industry is growing and opportunities are wide open. The 16 years included 12 of fulltime veterinary practice, mostly large animal (predominantly dairy) and being a practice owner for 7 years. Four years were spent working at a university extention programme in mastitis, udder healh and disease control which has given Jess a broad background and perspective with many aspects of production animal operations.

Jess's aim is to work with this great team of people to implement ideas, knowledge and technology that will help each and every dairy practitioner to be the best that they can be and hence provide excellence in service, knowledge and technology to their clientele. The dairy industry is New Zealand's economic backbone and it is our job as veterinarians to keep it healthy and strong.

When not working, Jess can be found running, biking, swimming, tramping or playing with her 2 dogs and 3 cats. An avid runner, now triathlete, anything that involves moving forward and is outdoors is worth doing especially if the dogs can accompany her. It was the Millenium Marathon which took place 1 January 2000 in Hamilton that brought Jess and her husband Jay to New Zealand for the first time. Ever since then, they did not want to leave.
